Summer Qi Chats | Week 1

Heart + Harmony

Summer reminds us that healthy aging is not about doing more, but expanding without losing yourself.

Expanding Without Losing Yourself…

Spring was about awakening potential & moving forward with change. Summer is about expressing it and finding transformation.

In Chinese medicine, Summer is the season of the Heart, the Shen, and the fullest expression of Yang Qi. The energy that was quietly stirring beneath the surface in Spring has now emerged into the open. The days are longer, the world is brighter, and life itself seems to reach outward. This is a season of expansion, connection, creativity, and participation.

As we age, many people become focused on preventing decline. While there is value in maintaining our health, Summer reminds us that healthy aging is about more than preservation. It is also about expression. The goal is not simply to keep functioning. The goal is to remain engaged with life. To laugh, connect, create, explore, and continue becoming.

From an Age Training perspective, Summer asks a different question than Spring. Spring asked, "What is possible?" Summer asks, "What are you doing with that possibility?"

Settling the Shen.

The Heart houses the Shen, often translated as spirit, awareness, or consciousness. When the Shen is settled, we feel present, connected, emotionally resilient, and capable of meeting life with clarity. When the Shen becomes scattered, we may experience restlessness, overwhelm, poor sleep, anxiety, or a sense that we are constantly busy yet rarely present.

This is why Summer training is not about doing more. It is about learning how to expand without becoming scattered.

Through Qigong, mindful movement, breathwork, walking, social connection, and time spent outdoors, we learn how to anchor ourselves while fully participating in life. Morning practices are especially valuable during Summer because they help establish a stable center before the activity and stimulation of the day begin.

The Heart thrives on rhythm, connection, and joy. This season invites us to cultivate all three. By creating small daily practices that ground the Shen and support Heart Qi, we build a foundation for healthy aging that goes beyond strength and mobility alone. We learn how to stay connected to ourselves even as life continues to expand around us.

This is why Summer Age Training is not simply about preserving strength. It is about preserving your capacity to participate in life. The ability to remain curious. The ability to connect. The ability to find joy. The ability to stay present. These are not luxuries. They are skills of healthy aging.
