Thoughts + Thriving

Our beliefs about aging influence the choices we make and the experiences we seek. Nourishing the Shen helps preserve our ability to continue learning, connecting, and participating in life.

Your mindset is your aging superpower

The Su Wen teaches that longevity is not simply a matter of preserving the body, but of protecting the Shen (神), our spirit, awareness, and capacity to engage with life. When the Shen is clear, calm, and connected, the entire system thrives. We sleep better, recover better, move with greater ease, and remain open to the joys and possibilities that each season of life brings.

Modern science is beginning to echo this ancient wisdom. Dr. Becca Levy's research has shown that our beliefs about aging profoundly influence how we age. People who hold more positive views of aging tend to live longer, recover better from illness, and maintain better physical and cognitive health. In other words, what we believe about our future shapes the biology that carries us there.

The Art of the Positive Mindset

In Chinese medicine, Yang Sheng (養生) means "to nourish life." It is the understanding that our daily habits shape how we feel, function, and age. The way we sleep, move, eat, breathe, connect with others, and spend our time all influence the health of both the body and the mind.

Modern neuroscience agrees. The brain is constantly adapting to our experiences and habits. Movement influences mood. Sleep affects emotional resilience. Social connection protects cognitive health. Time in nature calms the nervous system. The way we care for our bodies directly influences how our brain functions and, ultimately, how we think about ourselves and our future.

This is why Summer is such an important season for nourishing the Shen. Joy, meaningful connection, laughter, movement, and time outdoors are not simply pleasant experiences. They are practices that support a healthy, resilient mind. The more we care for our physical health, the more we create the conditions for a clear, calm, and connected Shen.

At the same time, our mindset influences our behaviors. The stories we tell ourselves about aging shape the habits we choose to practice. When we believe we are capable, adaptable, and still growing, we are more likely to move, connect, learn, and take care of ourselves. These choices then reinforce a healthier brain and a more positive outlook.

Perhaps a positive mindset is not something we simply have. Perhaps it is something we cultivate through the way we live.

The art of nourishing life is also the art of nourishing the mind.

Neuro-Qi Tip o’the day!

Shift the mindset

  • Catch yourself when you speak negatively about the body/aging/world and change the verbiage.

  • Teach the brain that the world is safe - movement & mindset - via moments of stillness.
