The ‘American Dream’ for Health is a Scam
We talk about health in this country just as we talk about wealth.
We have been told that if you pick yourself up by your bootstraps & work hard, you’ll achieve the American Dream and find success. Due to your efforts, you will be rewarded with financial stability & prosperity. We should all know by now that this statement isn’t necessarily true.
The same is said for health.
If you dedicate the time towards daily exercise, healthy nutrition, stress management, time outside, meditation, learning a new language/instrument, cold plunges, red light therapy, expert suggested supplemental purchases, etc. — then you’ll achieve the new American Dream and reverse aging and live pain-free.
Let’s get real for a second.
Many of us don’t have the time to do all that let alone the knowledge to know how to simply train the body and cook for optimal health. It’s true. I have studied movement for 18 years and I can tell you, most people do NOT know what they’re doing when they exercise and eat for health. I have seen a lot of terrifying ‘healthy’ habits from people who are trying their best but not going about it safely nor accurately.
PLUS - aging creates a TON of uncertainty. You can’t control life. Sorry, it’s true.
Here’s the truth:
In addition to not having the money for a private trainer & chef - most of us are not adjusting our minds for reality - and social media isn’t helping. We’ve all see the super heros online.
That 70 year old who look like a body builder.
That 80 year old who runs marathons.
That 90 year old who still does the jitter bug.
They are outliers.
Here’s the scam:
You are being sold that you too can be an outlier — if you put in the time and the money.
This overexposure to HEALTH TIPS allows you to think that this is all within your reach. Your expectation of what AGING should look like is skewed and you begin to feel the pressure to ‘do better’.
The scam is often exposed when you get sick or injured, when you begin to look & feel old.
It is within this moment of vulnerability that you wonder if you’re failing yourself because you didn’t try hard enough.
Most of your expectations about aging well are running faster than your brain and body can handle, you’ll never feel “perfectly healthy.” Instead, you’ll just feel behind and like you’ve failed.
Here’s the solution:
If chasing "perfect health" is a scam, then what’s the real goal? It’s this: build psycho-physiological resilience. (Not six-pack abs. Not running marathons. Not starving yourself into smaller jeans.)
Psycho-physiological resilience means having a strong, adaptable brain and body that can handle stress, injury, illness, and aging without falling apart. It’s about stacking up skills that actually make you freer as you age, not more fragile.
And that’s where Age Training — the core of what we teach at Bamboo Bodies — comes in.
Train Your Mindset
If you want resilience, you have to train for it. Neurologically speaking, your brain doesn’t just "figure it out" on its own as you get older.
You have to practice it.
YI NIAN - YOUR PRESENT MOMENT. In Bamboo Bodies, I often speak my students about paying attention to the movement. This concept is known as Yi Nian. When you come into ‘one thought’ you don’t give space for random thoughts to float into the mind. This practice is great to shoo away negative/busy thoughts that can sneak their way into your brain, especially when you’re injured, ill or awake at 3am.
NEI GONG - YOUR PRESENT BREATH. Your brain’s source of fuel (aside from glucose) is oxygen. Taking the time to fuel the brain means you have the ability to handle more adversity without depleting your resources. Neigong is a practice that brings you into the presence of your breath. As simple as ‘counting your breaths’ is a great tool for resilient training.
QIGONG - YOUR PRESENT MOVEMENT. Activation is key for adaptation. Think of the body like a river. The continual flow will create new pathways for water to travel. You’ll cut deeper banks & secure your ability for free flow. Movement moves Qi, lymph and blood in addition to your brain training for adaptability.
